Nilberg Wine Estate - Home

Who We Are

Welcome to Nilberg, where we produce small quantities of our award-winning Stellenbosch single-estate wines.

In 2011, a visit to the beautiful Cape Winelands cemented our love for the South African climate, lifestyle and, of course, the food and wine culture. This prompted a life-changing move from Sweden for our family and, ultimately, the establishment of Nilberg, our estate in the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch.

Our logo is inspired by the Swedish book, The Wonderful Adventures of Nils. Like the migrating goose in the much-loved classic children’s tale, our wine tells a story of the journey from vine leaf to wine, as well as our own story of a family that has embraced life in South Africa and is proud of our Swedish ties.

What We Do

At Nilberg, we lean into the Swedish. sensibility of ‘less is more’, with just three hectares of grapes under vine. Here, we grow our Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes using traditional dry vine methods, with minimal external intervention or irrigation, relying on the area’s natural rainfall and weather patterns to sustain and nurture our vines.

Since we are at a comparatively higher altitude, our handpicked grapes are harvested later in the season with the result that they are of better quality, with higher acidity and lower alcohol levels. We believe that this, together with our ‘nature-first’ and sensitive wine making approach are key to the complexities of our award-winning Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Blanc de Noir wines.
